Steampunk Canvas Art with Veronica

Hi, Veronica here today to share with you my latest project.  I had some of my girl friends over the other day and we decided to paint.  The picture was given to me by my friend Michelle.  She had a beautiful wedding, and I was lucky enough to be part of her special day.

In the spirit of "Using Your Stash" Challenge that ends this month, I gathered all my "onesies" embellishments and used them up.

My process:

Basically, you gather your product layer your canvas and start adding your embellishments.  Then you gesso your elements to give them tooth and prepare for color.

Grungy Guy Card by Tracey S.

It's Tracey back to share my latest Leaky Shed Studio project with you. While I adore creating feminine, girlie grunge style projects, there's nothing like a grungy masculine card for the men in my life. Leaky Shed Studio has some fabulous pieces that are so perfect for guy cards. Today I'm sharing the birthday card I created for my amazing husband, Gary.

I've gone to my stash and most of the items used have been in my possession for a while. I hope you'll play along with our "Use Your Stash" Challenge. Scroll down for all the details.

Tips and Techniques

It's so easy to give a grungy metallic finish to these Leaky Shed Studio Watch Parts by heat embossing with Fran-tage Aged Black Embossing Enamel. I've mixed in some metal elements to span across the card.

I adore the way the etched lines in this intricate Key Hole stay visible when heat embossed. I combined a base of bronze enamel, then sprinkled lightly with super fine black and reheated.

I used the same technique for the Key and alcohol ink on the metal sentiment.

Here's a view to see both the key and keyhole. I've also added a pair of Leaky Shed clock hands below the sentiment, enameled the same as the Watch Parts. The background is painted with transparent crackle, dry brushed with white gesso, then spritzed with mist to accent the cracks.

Getting dirty and grungey!

Good morning everyone!
Laura here to share a layout I created!

I am a mom to two very different boys - Cody is tidy and neat! Then there is Tyler....I end up cleaning up after our youngest the most - why you may ask....because he is a dirt magnet!

His favorite pastime is being in the shop with his dad, getting covered in oil and dirt and who knows what else....but he is happy so therefore so am I.

I always say 'God made kids in wash and wear sizes' lol!  

Tylers other favorite activity?  

Riding the go kart - he loves it the most after a rain and he can get a rooster tail going and do doughnuts with mud flying everywhere.....

The smile on his dirty face is proof that he is having a wonderful time!

I wanted the elements and the 7 dots paper to fit the dirty feel I was going for....

I covered the Leaky Shed Watch parts and the Gear Set  and that circle is a part from the Scroll Frame Ornament that I did not use when I used the ornament in sand texture medium, then sprayed them with mists and inks!

after I had everything layered I added some gesso!

I also used the sand gel medium with 'My'  and 'Boy' and with a stencil, then sprayed and inked and gessoed

Grungy Steampunk Card by Tracey Sabella

Hi everyone!! It's Tracey here to share this masculine steampunk birthday card I created for our son-in-law. I've been wanting to use the Leaky Shed Studio Hot Air Balloon for some time now and thought it would be fun to go steampunk with it. I've also used the Watch Parts, one of my favorite chipboard sets!!

Tips and Techniques

Often we think about molding paste being used with a stencil. Here, I've brushed Viva's Graphite Special Effect paste randomly over the chipboard, leaving bits of raw chipboard showing through in some places, and other areas with thicker layers of paste. 

The Leaky Shed Studio Hot Air Balloon fit perfectly over this balloon from Prima's Cartographer paper collection, which I fussy cut and adhered to the back of the chipboard. The "basket" is a jewelry finding piece from my stash. For a steampunk edge, I adorned with metal clock hands and mini gears. Some of them were a silver/pewter color, so I heat embossed them with Donna Salazar's Leather Mix'd Media Embossing Powder, which has a coppery metallic sheen. Others were copper and left in their natural state.

The Leaky Shed Studio Watch Parts were heat embossed with black embossing powder and while still hot and molten, sprinkled with Leather embossing powder and reheated giving this rusty metal look.

Girlie Grunge Birthday Card by Tracey Sabella

Hi everyone. It's Tracey here to share a girlie grunge birthday card featuring Leaky Shed Studio chipboard. Maria's favorite color is purple, but she's not a girlie girl, so I had fun including grunged up gears from the Watch Parts collection.

Tips and Techniques

These Watch Parts are painted black, then dry brushed with metallic berry paint. I also used a small Watch Part in the center of my focal flower.

Here's another view. I mixed plum and gold Glimmer Mist to brush over the flowers to add some shimmer.

This is half of a Flower Corner. I started by brushing the flourish with clear gesso and flowers with white gesso. I then layered on different colors of mist. Mist is a form of water color and will reactivate when rewetted, so to keep the colors clear, I misted with Helmar Clear Kote Matte Varnish between layers.

I colored this sweet Spring Dragonfly with Perfect Pearls, then added Sugar Shimmer Twinkle Dust Glitter to the wings. 

The background was misted in plum then splattered with grey and black. Again, I misted with clear varnish between colors.

"Merry & Bright" Christmas Card by Our September Guest Designer, Gloria Stengel

Hello, it is Gloria Stengel (Scraps of Life) with you today. This is my second project as the September guest designer at Leaky Shed Studio! I have loved playing with the amazing chipboard items!

I have created a Christmas card for you! I know, for some of you, it is way too early to think about Christmas cards! But, it is never to early to compile ideas!

"Merry & Bright"

I created a 4 1/2 x 6 inch card, using lots of layers, chipboard items, and flowers. This is a lumpy one, and will require extra postage and a padded envelope. You could also use this idea to create a home decor item!

I stared out by painting a selection of Leaky Shed Studio chipboard items with a coat of white gesso. Once the items were dry, I sprayed them with Tattered Angels Chalk Chalkboard Mist.

The large chipboard circle is actually the center piece from the Clock #1 chipboard item! (Never throw anything away!) I sprayed the chipboard with Tattered Angels Kiwi Glimmer Mist and then dried it with my heat tool. It gives a marbled look to the chipboard. I created a white, top-fold card from 4 1/2 x 12-inch cardstock, scored at 6 inches. I trimmed the red paper to 4 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches and distressed the edges before adding it to the card. I trimmed the plaid paper to 4 3/4 x 5 3/4-inches, distressed the edges and added it to the red panel. (The printed paper is from the Graphic 45 'Twas the Night Before Christmas collection.) I used Scor-tape to attach the cheesecloth to the center of the card. I glued the chipboard circle to the card, and then added the twine with Scor-tape.

I trimmed out the main image from the designer paper, and matted it with red paper. I attached the image to the card with foam squares.

I used the Keyhole Fancy as the base to build my flower cluster. I used a clock image cut from the designer paper, and then added flowers. To mimic snow, I added a bit of white gesso to the red flowers.

I glued the Flower Corner Small  to the left corner of the card and added the postage image to the top.

I tucked several Watch Parts around the edges of the image. Once the card was all put together, I used a pint brush to splatter it with Tattered Angels Creme de Cocoa and Crimson Glimmer Mist. Unfortunately, too many splatters ended up on the little boy's face! I saved the card by using a circle punch to trim out a second image. Then, I layered the circle over the main image with foam squares.

My name is Gloria Stengel and I live in beautiful, southern California. I am a wife of 27 years, and the mom of three kids, and the owner of two cats. 

 I have been hooked on paper crafts all of my life. I have always loved to color, play with paper dolls, and create "projects"! In 1990, I discovered rubber stamping and in 1996, I stumbled across "modern" scrapbooking. I love all aspects of paper crafting: card making, scrapbooking, mini albums, altered art, up-cycling, you name it! I am happiest when I am making a mess! It's the cleaning up part that I don't care for! My newest passion is designing stamps and other digital paper crafting items. I design stamps for Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps (clear/cling) and Hampton Art Stamps (wood mount). I also design digital stamps for myself and my blog readers. My dream is to have my own paper line someday!  I have been on a number of design teams over the past few years, including three terms with Graphic 45. I also accept various guest design spots and work with online stores from time to time. I have recently started my own challenge blog, Craft Hoarders Anonymous. I think the name says it all. I have a blog (Scraps of Life), a Facebook Fan Page, and a YouTube channel in order to share my creative work.

I am very excited to be the September guest designer here at Leaky Shed Studio! I love chipboard, and Leaky Shed has some of the BEST! I created a 9 x 7 inch, Halloween home decor piece to share with you.

"Jolly Halloween"

I love Halloween colors. The oranges and greens are just so lovely. When I saw the Julie Nutting Designs Spooky doll in my chipboard pack, I knew what I wanted to do with her! I wanted to really deck her out! However, once I got going, I decided to keep her rather plain, and deck out the rest of the project! I started by cutting a piece of chipboard to 9 x 7 inches, and inking the edges with black ink. I added decorative paper (Graphic 45 An Eerie Tale) as the background. I trimmed out the pumpkin border (Graphic 45 A Place in Time October) to span the top of the project.

I colored the 8-inch Spooky doll with a white pencil, just to give her that pale, spooky glow. I colored her hair and mask with Copic markers. I added some glitter to her hair with a glitter pen. I added glitter to her mask and to the little spider webs with glue and loose glitter. I created her dress out of paper, edged with black ink. (Graphic 45 Happy Haunting)

I nestled the Clock #1 next to the doll. It fit perfectly into the curve next to her hip! I inked the clock chipboard with black ink and then dabbed it with Delicata Silvery Shimmer pigment ink. This brand of ink dries very quickly and is a beautiful color. I used the same ink for the clock hands and the Watch Parts.

I  backed the center of the clock with decorative paper (Graphic 45 An Eerie Tale). And then I added fussy cut images all around the bottom of the clock. Once I had all the images placed where I wanted, I decided to add dimensional pieces. I used olive pigment ink to ink up the Small Flower Corner, which I trimmed in half in order to use it in two locations.

I added paper flowers and the Watch Parts chipboard, plus a few other fussy cut images to the display. I wanted this to look full and dimensional.

I used some foam squares to pop some items. I also added some "vines" by curling the flower stems that I cut off the flowers. Nothing goes to waste in my studio!

I finished off the piece with a polka dotted bow and a "button" that I cut from some of the paper. To give the "button" more dimension, I stacked it on top of 3 cardstock circles.
